1.What is a stretcher/stretch bars?
A stretcher is made up of four pieces of wood (stretch bars) that fit together to form a square. Before a painted canvas being framed, it is stretched over the stretcher to get more support.
You can buy pre-cut stretch bars in most art supply stores.
For the handy souls who like to make their own stretch bars, here is the link you can follow.
2.How to stretch a canva?
You will need a staple gun with staples, a pair of canvas pliers to get a strong pull and even tension on the canvas, and a tape measurer.
Step 1: Placing the stretcher in the center of the back of your painting.
Step 2: Pulling the top edge of the canvas over the middle of the top of the stretcher and pinning it to the back using the staple gun and staples.
Step 3: Pulling the bottom part of the canvas over the middle of the bottom of the stretcher and pinning it to the stretcher.
Step4: Do the same with the two sides of the canvas bars. You should see the tension in the canvas.
Step5: Once you are satisfied with the evenly stretched canvas, repeat step 2, 3, 4, continuing staple all the way round. It is very important to work from the middle of the stretcher to the corners.
Step 6: Once you’ve done the edges, at the corner, make a neat tuck in the canvas and staple it down.
Step 7: Repeat all the corners.
3.How to choose a painting?
The most important thing to remember is to choose what you love. It is you that choose the furniture, fabric, color etc in your living space. They must be what you like. It is the likeness that will unite the painting with the rest in your home. There is no right or wrong painting. But art is very personal, do keep in mind your available space, colour scheme and style.
Oil Painting Related Tips:
